4150 is commonly used in lawn mower blades and I have seen plenty of good knives out of them. 4140 is useable due to its alloy but its more along the lines of something I would use for hot tooling at the forge. 1045 again medium carbon about the same as 4140 but I would use the 4140 before that 1045.
