The following tables show AISI 316 mechanical properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and hardness, etc. Table-2, SS 316 mechanical properties, data are for 25.4 mm (1 in.) diameter bar
Grade 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. It has excellent forming and welding characteristics.
Room Temperature Tensile Properties Minimum mechanical properties for annealed Alloys 316, 316L and 317L austenitic stainless steel as required by ASTM specifications ASTM A213 and ASME specification SA-213 are shown below.
The main difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel is the level of carbon content, weldability, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. SS316 has a 0.08% max carbon content while SS316L (UNS S31603) only has a maximum 0.03% carbon content.
Mechanical Properties 316 / 316L are austenitic stainless steels that contain molybdenum, which increases their resistance to many chemical corrodents and marine environments. 316L is an extra low carbon version of 316 stainless steel.

The 316 family is a group of austenitic stainless steels with superior corrosion resistance to 304 stainless steels. They also have excellent toughness and can be used in the food, marine, chemical and architectural fields. Other applications include fasteners and screens for the mining industry.

SUS 304 Austenite stainless steel is usually referred to as the Japanese name for SS304 or AISI 304 stainless steel. There is no major difference except that the two grades are referred in Japanese and American grades. Some people although try to explain the difference in terms of mechanical properties.
Mechanical Properties Minimum mechanical properties for annealed Types 316, 316L, 317 and 317L austenitic stainless steel plate, sheet and strip as required by ASTM specifications A240 and ASME specification SA-240, are shown below.
Both AISI 303 stainless steel and AISI 316 stainless steel are iron alloys. They have a moderately high 94% of their average alloy composition in common. There are 34 material properties with values for both materials. Properties with values for just one material (2, in this case) are not shown.
be dual certified as 316 and 316L. The low carbon chemistry of 316L combined with an addition of nitrogen enables 316L to meet the mechanical properties of 316. Alloy 316/316L resists atmospheric corrosion, as well as, moderately oxidizing and reducing environments. It also resists corrosion in polluted marine atmospheres. The alloy has
316 / 316L stainless steel plates are part of the austenitic family of stainless steel and is the most widely used varieties of stainless plate. 316 grades contain a higher level of Nickel than 304 giving it an improved corrosion resistance over 304 grades. 316/316L plate is a good option for marine applications due to a good atmospheric corrosion resistance. 316L is a low carbon modification mechanical properties sus 316
RESISTANCE TO CORROSION TYPE 316 The addition of 2% molybdenum makes 316 considerably more resistant to corrosion and oxidation than the 304 family of alloys. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF TYPE 316 AT ROOM TEMPERATURE Typical Mechanical Properties required for annealed material covered by ASTM-A240.

The differences between a 316L and a 316 straight grade are two-fold both in chemistry and mechanical properties. The L grade has a lower maximum carbon limit and the straight grade has increased mechanical properties. If material is certified as straight grade, the carbon content would have to be at a level of 0.030% maximum in order to be dual certified as 316L/316 grade.
General Properties. Alloy 316/316L is molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. The higher nickel and molybdenum content in this grade allows it to demonstrate better overall corrosion resistant properties than 304, especially with regard to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
It is common practice for 316L to be dual certified as 316 and 316L. The low carbon chemistry of 316L combined with an addition of nitrogen enables 316L to meet the mechanical properties of 316. Alloy 316/316L resists atmospheric corrosion, as well as, moderately oxidizing and reducing environments.
Among wrought stainless steels, the composition of AISI 316 stainless steel is notable for containing a comparatively high amount of nickel (Ni). Nickel is primarily used to achieve a specific microstructure. In addition, it has a beneficial effect on mechanical properties and certain types of corrosion.

Alloys often are added to steel to increase desired properties. Marine grade stainless steel, called type 316, is resistant to certain types of interactions. There is a variety of different types of 316 stainless steels, including 316 L, F, N, H, and several others.
304 Stainless Steel Properties. 304 stainless steel is non-magnetic and exhibits high resistance to corrosion and oxidation against atmospheric, chemical, petroleum, textile, and food industry sources. It has good drawability the combination of low yield strength and high elongation permits fabrication into complex shapes. (Care should be mechanical properties sus 316
